Activities at Washington Grange Care Home
Our group and individual activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate those we care for. We try to organise a mix of activities and events that reflect the interests and capabilities of residents for anyone and everyone to participate in. Our evenings of afternoon entertainment is enjoyed by residents and their families, who are all encouraged to sing along and dance. We try to involve our local community; members of the clergy often visit to hold lovely afternoon church services for residents. It is essential that our team are dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for those we support through person-centred activities, and that everyone has a fun and active time here at Washington Grange.

Lauren Burns
Activities Coordinator
Hi, my name is Lauren and I joined Barchester in July 2025 as an Activities Assistant (bank) before progressing to my current role of Activities Coordinator. I wanted to join the team as I saw how great everyone worked together, it felt like ‘one big family’.
I enjoy helping the residents and finding out about the past and listening to their remarkable stories, understanding their preferences, and hobbies so we can include in the homes activities programme. Seeing residents smile and interact, keeping them active and stimulated as part of a varied life enrichment programme is important.
Celebrating life at Washington Grange Care Home
A wonderful Day Out for Our Resident Ambassador Lily & Activities Coordinator Lauren!
There’s nothing quite like spending quality time together, and that’s exactly what our wonderful Resident Ambassador, Lily, and our Activities Coordinator, Lauren, enjoyed during their day out at The Galleries Shopping Centre. The pair explored plenty of shops, browsed for treats and little treasures, enjoyed a delicious dinner together, and of course, shared a little gossip along the way! After all, all the best conversations over a good meal. Days like these are about so much more thank shopping-they’re about maintaining independence, building meaningful relationships, staying connected with the local community, and creating special memories that bring smiles long after the day is over.
At Washington Grange, we believe every outing is an opportunity to promote wellbeing, encourage choice, and celebrate the friendships that make our home such a happy place to be.
Flower arranging session for some of our beautiful ladies!
Flower arranging is so much more than creating something beautiful to admire. It encourages creativity, supports fine motor skills, promotes conversation, and provides a wonderful opportunity to relax and express ourselves. Each arrangement was unique, just like the incredible ladies who created them. The room was filled with smiles, laughter, lovely conversations and plenty of admiration as everyone carefully selected their flowers and deigned their own colourful displays.
Activities like these help to promote wellbeing, encourage independence and create meaningful moments that our residents can be proud of. We’re so proud of the stunning arrangements that were created – and even prouder of the joy and confidence they brought to everyone involved. Well done, ladies! Your beautiful creations certainly brightened our home.
Zoolab visit
Our residents had a fantastic animal therapy visit from the wonderful team at Zoolab, and there were smiles, laughter, and plenty of bravery all around! Residents got the chance to meet and handle an incredible variety of creatures, including snakes, tarantulas, giant snails, gerbils, cockroaches and more! Some residents were adventurous straight away, while others surprised themselves by stepping out of their comfort zones – proving it's never too late to try something new! Animal therapy visits like these help spark memories, encourage conversation, reduce anxiety, and bring so much joy and stimulation to our residents.
The room was full of excitement, curiosity, and lots of laughter throughout the session. A huge thank you to Zoolab for delivering such an interactive, educational, and meaningful experience for everyone. Your team was brilliant, and our residents enjoyed every minute!
Musical memories
Our lovely residents were treated to a fantastic visit from Musical Memories, and the home was filled with the joyful sounds of music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. There was singing, dancing, and plenty of smiles all around as everyone joined in with the classics we all know and love.
It was truly heart-warming to see our residents reminiscing, laughing, and enjoying such special moments together! Music has such a powerful way of bringing people together, and today was a perfect reminder of that. The energy in the room was amazing, and the happiness on everyone’s faces said it all. A huge thank you to Michaela for coming in and making the morning so memorable.

Resident realises dream
Resident, David had always wanted to visit The Fans Museum Sunderland- a place full of football history, passion, and memories. So, staff at the home made his wish a reality.
David has lived at Washington Grange for 4 years and is beloved by staff and residents alike. Staff at the home were delighted to be a part of making his dream come true, as they knew how much it meant to him, and they all wanted to be there to see the smile on David’s face when his dream was realised.
Staff first found out about David’s dream in 2026 and, ever since then, they have been dedicated to helping him achieve it. David was also accompanied by relatives who were there to witness this momentous occasion. In response to this wonderful surprise, David, said: “I have had the best birthday ever, it was a dream to go there- I just never got the opportunities”

A birthday wish completed
At Washington Grange Care Home, we believe birthdays should be filled with joy, meaning, and a little bit of magic – and that is exactly what we created for our wonderful resident David! This year, David has a special birthday wish… to visit The Fans Museum Sunderland – a place full of football history, passion, and memories.
So our activities coordinator teamed up with David’s loving wife and his son to make it happen. From the moment they arrived, David was all smiles! Sharing the experience with his family made it even more meaningful, as they explored the incredible memorabilia and reminisced about cherished football moments together. It wasn’t just a trip – it was a celebration of David, his passions, and the people who mean the most to him. Moments like this remind us how important it is to make wishes come true, no matter how big or small!
Easter joy
What a truly special and heart-warming day we had celebrating Easter together. Some of our wonderful staff members brought their families into the home to join our residents for a fun-filled Easter egg hunt. Seeing different generations come together created such a warm and joyful atmosphere throughout the home. Residents loved watching the children searching high and low for colourful eggs, sharing laughter, stories, and smiles along the way.
It was beautiful to see friendships forming, memories being made, and our home filled with happiness and excitement. Moments like this are so meaningful. Bringing families into our home helps create a sense of community, connection, and belonging for our residents. Events like this remind us all how important it is to share joy, laughter, and special occasions together. A huge thank you to our amazing staff and their families for making this day so special, and to our residents for joining in with such enthusiasm.

A Paws-itively Wonderful Afternoon
Our residents at Washington Grange were delighted to welcome Mike and his wonderful four-legged companion Fable from Wag & Co North East Friendship Dogs. The visit brought so much joy throughout the home, with plenty of smiles, laughter, cuddles, and meaningful conversations. Fables calm and affectionate nature helped create a warm, relaxed atmosphere, while also encouraging residents to reminisce, share stories about pets they’ve loved, and enjoy the special companionship that only a dog can bring. Animal therapy visits like these have such a positive impact on wellbeing, helping reduce loneliness, encourage social interaction, and brighten everyone’s day. It was truly heart-warming to see so many happy faces and the wonderful connections being made.
A huge thank you to Mike and Fable for spending the afternoon with us and for bringing so much happiness into our home. We always look forward to your visits and cant wait to welcome you back soon!
A beautiful morning in the garden
Our residents made the most of the glorious hot weather by relaxing outdoors, listening to lovely music, reading through reminiscing books and sharing wonderful memories together. We also enjoyed some delicious fruity snacks and cooling ice lollies to help everyone stay refreshed in the sunshine. It was wonderful to see so many smiles, laughter and conversations as everyone soaked up the fresh air and enjoyed each other’s company.
Of course, staying safe in the sun is very important, so everyone wore sun cream to protect their skin while enjoying the warm weather safely. Moments like this remind us how important simple pleasures, companionship and fresh air can be for wellbeing and happiness!
A wish fulfilled at Washington Grange
For weeks, our wonderful resident's ambassador Lily has been sharing her ideas for a sweet trolley – filled with sweets, tasty treats, and refreshing drinks for everyone to enjoy. Lily’s enthusiasm and excitement inspired us all, and we knew we had to make it happen! Our amazing Deputy Manager, Lynsey, spent weeks collecting pieces, decorating, and putting her creativity to work to bring Lily’s vision to life. From thoughtful details to colourful decorations, every part of the trolley has been created with love and care.
The 20th April marked the grand opening of our very own sweet trolley! Our resident ambassador Lily, deputy manager Lynsey, and manager Ben proudly cut the ribbon together, opening the trolley for everyone to enjoy. The smiles, laughter, and excitement of residents and staff made the moment even more special. This is what Washington Grange is all about – listening, caring, and making wishes come true. A huge thank you to Lily for her fantastic idea, Lynsey for her dedication and creativity, and Ben for supporting this wonderful initiative.
A lovely day at Washington Grange

Our resident spent the afternoon relaxing outdoors, soaking up the warm sunshine, enjoying a refreshing glass of lemonade, and taking in the fresh air.
These simple moments can bring so much joy, and it was wonderful to see such smiles and contentment. Spending time outdoors not only lifts spirits but also supports wellbeing, offering opportunities for relaxation, conversation, and enjoying the little things that make each day special. At Washington Grange, we love creating meaningful moments like these, ensuring our residents continue to enjoy life’s pleasures – whether its sunshine, good food, or simply a peaceful afternoon outside.
